Creating Your Own Heavy Metal Styled Posters With Photoshop

Do you need a more grungy and heavy metal style for your posters? Besides just pasting in random metal textures, there are a lot of ways that you can add that grungy metallic style.

Here in this tutorial we will talk about not only putting metal textures into a poster. We will also discuss how you can turn your text styles into metal and integrate them creatively unto metal textures. So if you want to learn how to create your own heavy metal styled posters, here is the guide for you.

1. The first step is to set your poster dimensions. Here is where some people get things wrong as they only look at the dimensions. While you can easily set the dimensions (width and height), many people pass over the resolution value. The resolution is important as it will determine the real quality of the design in printing posters. A minimum of 300ppi is recommended in fact for the best results. So once you create a new document in Adobe Photoshop, make sure that you set at least this value for your resolution, along with the poster dimensions that you want.

2. With your new document open, the first step is to write your poster title. This will be the main feature of our heavy metal style poster. Just use Photoshop’s text tool to write your desired title. Use a black color for your text for now and of course, choose a font style that matches your theme.

3. Also, while this is not actually required, it is good to reduce the spacing or tracking within the characters. You can do this through the characters panel. If you do not see this, go to Windows->Character in the menu bar. Alternatively you can select a group of text and press CTRL+T to bring this up. Simply change the tracking value (AV icon) to something negative to bring the text closer together. Note that you can also change a lot of the text attributes in this panel. Play around!

How To Create A Vintage Car Grunge Poster

In this guide, we will discuss the steps in creating a vintage car poster with that distinct grunge style that many people like. We will be combining a lot of different elements here to get the right grunge + vintage look that we need. So we will have to pay attention to a lot of details and acquire some great fancy (but totally free) elements. Let us get started.

1. Before anything else, we will need to setup our base poster document. So open up Adobe Photoshop and then press CTRL+N to create a new document. Set your dimensions for a poster. A typical poster dimension is an 11×17 inch poster, so we punch in those details. Also make sure to choose at least 300ppi for resolution as this is the basic standard for quality printing. If you’re looking for a poster printer click here

2. Now, with a new document open, we will start by building up our background. To make a grunge paper background, we are going to combine three elements. We will use an old paper texture and two additional grunge wall finishing textures. So first we paste in our old paper texture. This will be our base. You can find lots of free textures like this in Flickr, Deviantart or Morguefile.

3. Next, we paste in a grunge texture of an unfinished wall with rough concrete elements. We chose this because it had some nice scratchy lines that may add an old worn out feel to the paper. We scaled it to size, and then we changed its blend mode to ‘Multiply’. We also reduced its opacity so that we can see the texture integrated subtly unto the paper.

4. Next, we paste in our last grunge element. This time, it is a concrete texture with discolored spots. The spots can help simulate the discolored features of old paper. De-saturate the image by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+U.

Quick Tip #1: How to Create a Glossy Button Vector in Photoshop

This is a quick photoshop tutorial for everyone. This will show you the easiest and quickest way on how to create a glossy button vector in Adobe Photoshop in few simple steps. Here are the details that everyone should take note of. First, software or program to be used is Photoshop CS5. Second, it takes only fifteen to twenty minutes to finish this task. It might take a shorter time for experts, but it might do the same for beginners too, since this tutorial is very easy to understand and follow. Last thing to remember is to take a good look at the finished product before you start doing your own creation as to have the idea on how you would want your creation to appear. You don’t have to follow the specified color for this tutorial. You can have your own, of course.

Now, let’s tackle the steps. Illustrations are given on the provided link.
1. Create a new document in adobe Photoshop with Width 800px and Height 800px.
2. Select the ‘Ellipse tool’ to draw a circle, press ‘Shift’ key while drawing to get a perfect circle.
3. Now click on this ellipse layer and go to Layer> Layer style> Blending options.
4. Create another circle larger than the previous. Place this new circle layer just above the background layer.
5. Now click on this new circle layer to select it and go to Layer> Layer style> Blending options. Use the same settings for stroke as used in step 3.
6. Now I’ll create highlights for the glossy button. Select the ‘Hard round brush tool’ with # ffffff color. Adjust its size according to the button’s smaller circle and apply it on a new layer.
– Now select the ‘Hard round eraser tool’ of the same size and erase the circle to form a nice highlight as shown below.
– Reduce this layer opacity to 50%. Duplicate this layer by going to Layer> Duplicate layer and arrange this highlight on the bottom area using ‘Free transform tool (Ctrl+ T)’.
7. Create a new layer; select the ‘Soft round brush tool’ with # ffffff color. Size should be around 40-50px, apply it as shown below. Change the blending mode of this layer to ‘Overlay’.

There you go. Easy as ABC.

Microsoft critical patches covering 23 vulnerabilities

Another quick announce.

Microsoft posted new security bulletin MS12-035:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms12-035
Reporting vulnerabilities in Windows, Office, Silverlight and the .NET Framework. Three critical patches from May 08, 2012 are patching some large security breaches.
The .NET is remote code vulnerability, and the patch should be applied asap.

New plesk exploit on linux versions 9.0-9.23

Yup, as per the title – Parallels alert about new exploit on Plesk linux versions 9.0-9.23. This is just an announce so I will be short.

The PHP Group issued a vulnerability alert that PHP-CGI-based setups contain vulnerability when parsing query string parameters from PHP files. PHP CGI Advisory You can find more information at the PHP‘s website. A remote unauthenticated attacker could obtain sensitive information, cause a denial of service condition or may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the web server. As per the Parallels Plesk Lifecycle Policy, these versions do not provide ongoing patch support. Upgrade to the latest version of Parallels Plesk Panel will eliminate this vulnerability.

That’s it! Keep your systems up-to date.

Simple Abstract Text Titles With Photoshop

The Abstract Style in text is a mainstream way of displaying your print titles. From postcards, posters to brochures, magazines and catalogs, you will always see a couple of these designs sporting creative wild styled abstract titles to draw readers in and make the printed artwork look a lot more distinct.

If you want to try your hand on creating your own creative abstract text, then read the steps below. This should give you all the necessary instructions in creating your own abstract titles easily. Just try it out in your own Photoshop.

1. The first thing you will need to do is of course to create your new document. Size it as you need it. Set the resolution to 300ppi though, especially if you are going to use this graphic for your printed materials. To create a new document in Adobe Photoshop, simply press CTRL+N.

2. The next thing you will want to do is to setup your background. You can either create your own background or copy/paste a special graphic from the Internet. For our purposes we have pasted in a nice red grunge background for the design.

3. Now, type in your title text. Choose any font style you may like, however it is recommended that you do choose something that has thick character styles so that everyone can see the abstract design style created unto the text. Color your text white for now so that it is easier to see on our grunge background.

4. Now, select the area of your text by clicking on its picture Thumbnail.

Critical Windows Vulnerability with Remote Desktop

Recently Microsoft released a patch for a critical bug in RDP (Remote Desktop) that may allow an unauthenticated attacker to take control to remote Windows system. This vulnerability in Remote Desktop (MS12-020) could allow Remote Code execution allowing system penetration. It rated Critical for all supported releases of Microsoft Windows.

All windows servers with automatic updates enabled should have received the patch at March 13th 2012, but if your system has the automatic updates turned off, the issue still persist.
With the bellow commands executed in command prompt you can check if the security patch is applied already:

The security update addresses the vulnerabilities by modifying the way that the Remote Desktop Protocol processes packets in memory and the way that the RDP service processes packets.

Here is maybe the point where I will say that if you change Windows Remote Desktop Port number will increase your security level – at least when the system is scanned with automated bot looking for the default 3389 port.

More information can be found at Microsoft Security Bulletin page for MS12-020:

Plesk vulnerability issue

For a first time I saw Plesk before about 6-7 years when ordered one of my first servers with control panel. To be honest till version 8.6 I was not so exited, but with that version and above it became pretty stable, and I started liking it more and more.
Unfortunately couple of days ago over Internet was spread there was found critical vulnerability in Plesk versions 7.6.1(my first one) to 10.3.1 one of the latest. Well, it is nice to realise your servers had been exposed for such long time, and such security hole was kept secret until penetration of two servers hosting websites for the Federal Trade Commission (Plesk control panel bug…) instead of thousands maybe not so important servers.

Well, in short the issue is critical, it is network exploitable, and it is rather easy the server to be compromised – in other words every second wannabe hacker can penetrate your server. There is no need of authentication to be exploited, and it allows unauthorized access and modification on a server level. Vulnerable Plesk Panel versions are: 7.6.1 – 10.3.1

Pretty bad ha?

Because this Plesk vulnerability the hacker to make changes to the user accounts, files, and sites – even after patches are applied he may still have access to sites.
If you have even a small doubt your sever was compromised before you applied the patches, it is strongly recommended to change passwords of all accounts in Plesk!

So, if you have server with Plesk it is required to check if it is up-to-date, and you will need the following information:

1. Find Plesk version:

You can login via ssh using Putty, and using the following command to print the current Plesk version:

For Plesk version on Windows the command will be:

executed in the command line.

2. Find which Plesk microupate is currently installed :

Note: On some old Plesk versions, you will not find ‘microupdates.xml’ file

Once you have this information you will have to apply the according patch. Here is the official list of Parallels articles explaining how to apply patch in Plesk:
