Other on-page ranking factors

There are few other on-page ranking factors left since we finished the previous tutorial External links optimization.

In this chapter we will discuss:

Page renovation

Frequency of page updates

Page size

URL division

URL length

Page links renovation

All these ranking factors are also important for good on-page optimization. Their perception was changed several times through the years, and I will describe here the current parameters accepted by the search engines. Also will try to keep up to date this page, so if there is a change to be registered.

Page renovation – page freshness.

The page freshness at this moment is important as both users and search engines like content changing. Whether this parameter considerable changes over time, but at this moment it matters.
Here the specialists argue as there are many old pages ranked well. My opinion is that if you have one old and one recently updated, the changed one will rank well for competitive terms.

Frequency of page updates

Frequent page update is simply to update your pages frequently. Even on daily or hourly basis.
Frequent updates means frequent crawler visitations which means newer cache with the search engines.

Page size

Try to not make your pages bigger than 100KB. The crawlers are getting scatter and literally start hesitating how far to go.

Here also has different persuasions, but most of the specialists think about 300-500 words with and not much collateral page code as an acceptable content.

URL division

Do not try to separate keywords in your URL. Fresh-ness when you are optimizing for freshness is not a good idea at all. This – is a preferable method to put a space without need, and if you overdo it will be considered as a spam.

The other division part is (/), try to keep it not much than four levels. Beyond that number the spider could give up.

URL length

Try to keep your links not bigger than 100 symbols. Less than this number is better. More than 2000 are not good and Internet Explorer do not accept such number.

The next URL is not so appreciated by the search engines …

… as the following one.

Note: the keywords in the URL are good for user navigation and still worth as a basic SEO.

Page links renovation

Here for sure the search engines decide differently. For the newer sites it is not good idea to change the links inside, both incoming and outgoing. For old trusted sites the freshness of the links is good ranking factor.

When we started this site the home page links didn’t give the same weight as they do now.

This was the last tutorial about on-page (landing page) optimization. In the next tutorial will discuss few more on-SITE ranking factors and we will finish the SEO Compliance.
